Environmental impact of big cattle business

Wednesday, July 18th, 2007

There have been numerous studies recently about the benefits of organic foods. Here is another reason to avoid big-agro cattle farming from the University of Minnesota…..

Do Antioxidants Increase Mortality????

Saturday, May 12th, 2007

One of the four major medical journals, JAMA, recently released a study which concluded that antioxidants increase mortality rate. It made big headlines, but unfortunately got blown out of proportion. There were many problems with this study which are described below (more…)

Another Study Proving the Importance of Happy Gut Flora….

Friday, May 11th, 2007

If you look at any traditional culture they have culture in their diets. Japanese have miso, Russians have Kefir, German have sauerkraut, and the Irish Guinness. In the USA we do not have any traditional fermented foods. If it is fermented and store bought then it is also pasteurized, (more…)

Take Action! Almonds Required to be Pasteurized in September 2007

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

I thought this was a bad April Fool’s joke. (I received an email late in the evening on March 31st). Almonds are an amazing food. Soaking almonds overnight start the sprouting process and gives it a sweet favor. Plump. But now the California Almond Board is requiring that almonds are pasteurized come September. This will kill enzymes and bacteria. Both good and bad. Ludicrous. Raw milk doesn’t spoil like pasteurized milk. Why? Because it contains beneficial enzymes and bacteria that are destroyed during pasteurization. (more…)

Maternal Vitamin D linked to wheezing in 5 year olds

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

In yet another study showing the importance of the vitamin of the year, Vitamin D, lower maternal intake is linked to an increase in wheezing among 5 year olds. The study was done here in New England (in Boston at the Brigham and Beth Israel) where the prevalence of asthma is the highest in the nation. (more…)

GMO Corn May Cause Renal and Hepatic Toxicity

Monday, March 19th, 2007

A study release this week which apparently made big press in France, but not a word here in the US showed that Monsanto GM corn caused hepatorenal toxicity in rats. This is GM corn that was approved for human consumption worldwide because research showed it was safe. Who published this safe research? (more…)

Don’t put milk in your tea!

Saturday, March 3rd, 2007

A new study released last week concluded that adding milk to black tea counteracts the positive health effects it provides for vascular function. The researchers compared the dilation effects of fresh black tea, black tea w/milk and boiled water as a control. They found that the tea with milk had no vascular benefit at all.

What is the larger message here? That just because some food, herb or supplement contains a particular ingredient that supposedly causes some reaction in the body doesn’t mean it will.

Oral contraception reduces antioxidant status and energy production

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

A recent study showed that women who took the Pill for at least 6 months had significantly lower concentrations of CoQ10 and Vitamin E than women who were not on the Pill. CoQ10 and vitamin E, fat soluble anti-oxidants support energy production and protects against free radical damage. CoQ10 is produced by the human body and is necessary for mitochondrial energy production as well as antioxidant protection. Although the researchers did not discuss it in their article it is interesting that the lower concentrations of Vitamin E can be because of a CoQ10 reduction, as CoQ10 helps ‘recycle’ Vitamin E. Men Need to Eat Their Veggies!

Friday, March 2nd, 2007

No surprise. Your Mom was right. You need to eat your veggies. Another study showing that eating vegetables has a tremendous benefit to health was just released. This one a large epidemiological study looking at the incidence of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Interestingly, vegetable consumption was inversely associated with BPH whereas fruit intake was not. However, consumption of fruit rich in ß-carotene , lutein , or vitamin C was inversely related to BPH.

Surprsingly a high vitamin C supplementation increased the risk of BPH, whereas eating foods high in vitamin C did not. Why might that be? (more…)

Soy for Breast Cancer?

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

In 2004 I wrote an unpublished meta-analysis paper investigating the potential protective mechanism of soy phytoestrogens and breast cancer. The conclusion was that “…the consumption of properly prepared fermented soy foods (miso, natto, tempeh) during adolescence appears to provide a chemoprotective effect later in life. (more…)
